Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying these medications should be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become starving," described an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on combined behavioural support.
