At least thirteen passengers lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a significant growth of its duties in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
